Melodic Ornaments: Mastering Alankars

Alankar literally translates to 'ornament' or 'jewel'. In Hindustani classical music, alankars are systematic pattern-based Swara arrangements designed to embellish compositions. They are the backbone of classical vocal and instrumental training.

Popular Alankar Patterns

1. The Step alankar (Arohan-Avarohan)

SaRe, ReGa, GaMa, MaPa, PaDha, DhaNi, NiSa. This pattern improves transitions between adjacent notes.

2. The Inverse Step alankar

SaReSa, ReGaRe, GaMaGa, MaPaMa, PaDhaPa, DhaNiDha. Improves rapid finger return loops.

Vocal Alignment

Always practice alankars while singing the notes. This builds your internal pitch reference, allowing you to play by ear over time. Practice in a steady rhythmic cycle (laya).
